Tulliah - “Just My Type (A Little Bit Lonely)”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Lana Del Rey, Maggie Rogers, Lucius

Tulliah’s debut EP, 2021’s Fre$h Hugs, is a quiet take on pop, based in small piano ballads dipped in sorrow and reflection. While formed in indie folk modes, Tulliah comes across more as a pop-R&B artist, albeit an understated one that is willing to let the space between the notes really flourish. While beautiful and minimal, there’s raw sincerity here there too, a vulnerability that is born from bedroom pop and played out with melancholic patience. A unique glue that carries throughout Fre$h Hugs are spoken-word sections between tracks. It may seem like a small touch, but it’s an aspect that lends a serious lens to an otherwise light atmosphere. Tulliah’s debut full-length is due sometime this year, so expect the bulk of her SXSW to contain new material in addition to highlight tracks from this dream-pop, debut EP. (Kevin McStravick)
