WRITHING!, the latest full-length from psych-pop band Voka Gentle, is a testament to how far the British artists are willing to stretch without falling off a self-created cliff. Jungle beats, dream pop, ambient, and noise rock all take turns leading the ambitious effort, pulsing soundscapes with rhythm and achieving a sound somehow both warm and fully off-chain. In many other hands, this collage of sound would be a mess, making WRITHING! that much more impressive simply for not crumbling under the weight of their own eccentricity. Even though their songwriting is reaching towards outer musical edges, Voka Gentle’s music still grooves, even hitting full funk at moments throughout WRITHING!. Voka Gentle showcases Tuesday night at The 13th Floor for Post-Electric Artists and happens to follow fellow recommended artist Hamish Hawk on that eclectic bill. (Kevin McStravick)
