We Were Promised Jetpacks - “Not Me Anymore”
Pairs Well With…Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, The War on Drugs
Approaching their twentieth year as a band, We Were Promised Jetpacks still have a tight grip on their emotive, indie rock sound as evidenced by their latest release, 2021’s Enjoy the View. Gravitating around a moody, mid-tempo core, We Were Promised Jetpack’s songs aren’t necessarily bright nor overtly somber, tight garage grooves and alt-rock hooks anchoring their relatively grand sound. Tight but not wound, the Scottish band is as reliable a SXSW pick as you can find given their deep, consistent catalog, but the songs from Enjoy the View are fully representative in their own part and will be welcoming to new-discovery ears. 2012 Review: The band is best described as dramatic rock, but there’s a punk energy that pours of their records in a gritty and forthcoming fashion. We Were Promised Jetpacks feature dense instrumentation and a driving rhythm section, pulsing their sound rather than going for anything that would be traditionally considered “catchy”. This is where all the drama comes from – instead of tapping your toes, it’s easy to get lost in the subtly psychedelic nature of their music.
