Half Gringa - “Miranda"

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Tomberlin, Helena Deland, Nilufer Yanya

Half Gringa continues to mine her blend of minimal indie folk and shoegaze bursts on 2023 EP Ancestral Home, balancing light and heavy, organic and psychedelic. Instead of finding a middle ground, the Chicago artist commits fully to either end and finds a surprising amount of depth in a melancholy-rock core. Vocally she’s able to pull off the same notion, understated and within a tight frame as Half Gringa is able to find depth in subtle inflections instead of sweeping melodies. Check out Half Gringa on Thursday night at Lefty’s Brick Bar, kicking off the festivities for Field Booking Agency at 7:00. (Kevin McStravick)

2022 Review: Contemplative and introverted, Half Gringa takes a bedroom folk setting and adds some indie-rock heft to broaden her sound across sophomore record Force to Recon and more recent follow-up track “Sevenwater”. Emotive and serious, there’s weight to Half Gringa’s songwriting, part melancholy and part yearning, a balance the Chicago-based artist maintains throughout her emerging catalog. 90s grunge pop and indie rock inform Half Gringa’s sound, one that is driving but still covered in patient, introspective tones.
