Pairs Well With…Helena Deland, Babehoven, The Dresden Dolls

Part grimy rock and part melancholy folk, Half Dream are hard to pin down on 2020 record Monster of Needing and a trio of follow-up singles since. While they base their sound in mid-tempo, rooted material, Half Dream can rock the fuck out too with heavy, grungy reverb widening the Austin band’s songwriting. Vocally, there are some strong theatrical influences here both in terms of melody and drama, a quality that teeters on melodrama and subverts expectations when starting from Half Dream’s soft, vulnerable origins. Half Dream are working up a sophomore release due sometime in 2023, so look for their SXSW set to offer some new material at Low Down Lounge Tuesday night. (Kevin McStravick)
