Akinyemi - “BREATHE”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Kemba, Smino, Bas

2021 saw Akinyemi release his first record REBORN, a collection throwing back to classic NYC rap influences and melding them in his slowed down, psychedelic wheelhouse. Half-sung/half-rapped vocals are dealt in conversational ways, a clear mix of personal and political stories throughout the album. Jazz, soul, and R&B forms find their way into REBORN as well, balancing the record without sounding like Akinyemi is jumping genre to genre indiscriminately, rather blending smoothly into one cohesive vibe. 2020 Review: Internalized, psychedelic raps and beats highlight Akinyemi’s music, often cooled out and borderline hypnotic, creating a chillwave-like environment for his understated or bouncing rhymes. Even more rumbling tracks like “Breathe”, which features Akinyemi building up to an impressive quick-spitted, percussive rap pace, are built within a naturalized, chilled space. The Queens Village, NY artist has released only a few singles so far, a couple of which are expected to end up on his upcoming debut record Warrior’s Fate, songs that have subtle hints of jazz and are delivered in Akinyemi’s unique, unexpected melodies.
