Alice Ivy - “Broke My Heart” (feat. Mallrat & Jelani Blackman)

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Sofi Tukker, SZA, Sylvan Esso

Alice Ivy is a funk artist at her core, embellishing with indie pop and EDM melodies without losing the core of bass and drum grooves. Neo-soul R&B, psychedelic pop, and hip hop influences find their way into Ivy’s two full-lengths and early singles from her upcoming record Do What Makes You Happy. Full of pop melodies and willing to take on literally any genre, Alice Ivy focuses on softened hooks, cleanly produced, but rarely straight mainstream pop. Her chameleon tendencies are balanced by her push towards memorable, catchy phrases - Alice Ivy’s success comes from making these excursions sound natural versus pushing edges for the sake of it. The result is warm and accessible, held hands leading listeners to spaces both comfortable and visceral. (Kevin McStravick)
