“Ukrainian Hip Hop” is a good kicker for the Mad-Libs openness of a SXSW roster, so starting things off in 2024 with alyona alyona feels like the right beginning for this year’s Operation Every Band. Alyona alyona continues to share sharp singles since last year, based in classic and trap hip-hop beats, putting an Eastern European spin on a largely pop-oriented sound. Constantly catchy, language barriers are quickly broken. A percussive and expressive instrument, alyona alyona’s flow is equally tight and comfortable. 2020 Review: Alyona alyona’s raps sound clear and inspired on a pair of 2019 records, tightly controlled even when filling every corner of a bar with verse. Musically, alyona alyona’s beats range from 90s-era big-sound rhythms to some minor trap leans, mostly keeping things relatively simple and putting the emphasis on rhythm over changing melodies. That efficiency translates to her equally percussive flow, driving tracks further rather than relaxing behind the beat. It’s an impressive and infectious sound - alyona alyona also has a strong grasp on pop-rap hooks, acquiring a sound both edgy and fun on tone and sound alone.
