Beachtape - “Somewhere Better”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Slow Pulp, DIIV, Pavement

Beachtape’s sophomore EP Bigger Picture adds some breezy dreaminess to their core indie rock sound and the lighter touch pays off with a new softened comfort. It shows the UK band’s connection to classic rock influences even more - it’s clear the band has put songwriting first as they move forward in their career. Not to say their grunge rock riffs are totally absent on Bigger Picture, rather they find ways to twist those themes almost like a shoegaze band, but built around alt-rock hooks instead of pure fuzz. (Kevin McStravick)

2020 Review: Brighton, England’s Beachtape plays a grungy form of indie rock, hiding some power pop hooks in their slacker rock riffs and droning feedback. Recorded with a distant garage/bedroom rock intention, the band’s 2017 debut EP Hold Music and a trio of follow-up singles sound intentionally vulnerable instead of incessantly driving. It’s a nice touch in the alt/modern rock space and makes Beachtape’s tracks feel real and comfortable with a mid-tempo ease.
