Calva Louise - “Euphoric”
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 7
Pairs Well With…Paramore, Sleigh Bells, Wet Leg
Fusion rock artists Calva Louise pull their influences from all over, but rather going the art-rock route, the Manchester-based trio go for driving, metal-infused intensity to drive music forward. Punk pop, indie rock, hip hop, and alt rock all play a part in Calva Louise’s music, tight punk bangers collected over their 2021 sophomore record Euphoric. In what could turn into nu-metal sludge in other’s hands, Calva Louise are able to make industrial pop sound interesting and intricate, viscerally moving with tightly wound punch. Take all of that and add a Latin rock twist - Calva Louise balance Euphoric with 50/50 English and Spanish vocals, like a band morphing into a different form of itself while still hitting with hard confidence. They are a band who are willing to take some leaps and play with fearless focus, a sign of a must-catch live act as they swing through SXSW this year. Calva Louise perform Wednesday night with the British Music Embassy at Cedar Street Courtyard. (Kevin McStravick)
