Carpetman - “Can’t Lose More”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Alt-J, Moses Sumney, serpentwithfeet

Intricate electronic R&B with waves of rock intensity, Carpetman’s early singles are full and affirming. The Ukranian artist moves from spacious pop to dense electro-funk, specializing in crooning soul tracks overall. These aren’t throwback tracks however, rather Carpetman takes those influences and adds a personal twist that is part Trap and part bedroom folk. Carpetman has a rich, relatively unique vocal as well, low and commanding in a way that matches the subtle drama playing out in the music underneath. While there are only five singles to go from, it’s clear Carpetman leans on the more expressive, ballad-leaning elements of his music, but these songs are more dynamic than they are sleepy. They are patient however, incorporating mini-sections within each song in order to embellish both musically and emotionally. (Kevin McStravick)
