China Bears - “No Change Tonight”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…The National, Death Cab For Cutie, Keane

China Bears have been quiet on the ‘new music’ front since the release of their third EP All That Distance back in 2022, a continuation of the band’s anthemic rock-pop ballads and moody indie-rock numbers. For a group that is able to get so grand so quick, it’s curious that they still haven’t released a full-length, so keep an ear out for what’s next soon as they prep for another SXSW trip. Until then, revisit China Bears’ full and engaging early catalog, a balanced collection of well-written ballads and big tunes built on worn rock hooks. Instantly accessible, they’re a band that’s flown under the radar as they’ve crafted the China Bears sound and would be welcome on bigger UK festival stages if this trend continues through 2024. 2022 Review: China Bears’ sophomore EP Statue Still showcases an even tighter unit in terms of both songwriting and performing, a trio of single-quality tracks of dense, catchy, and anthemic indie rock. While not hitting you over the head, these songs are huge, building and shimmering guitar rock studied in 90s and 00s alt and indie rock. It’s truly surprising that China Bears aren’t more widely known given the accessibility and appeal of their sound - perhaps SXSW will offer a bit of that springboard for this exciting, fully-formed UK band.
