Daniel Nunnelee - “Pick and Choose”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Iron & Wine, The Milk Carton Kids, The Head and the Heart

Daniel Nunnelee is crushing his pop-leaning, indie-folk sound across a string of moving EPs since debuting five years back, most recently on 2021’s It’s Okay It Has to Be and follow-up single “Pick and Choose”. At it’s root, Nunnelee’s music is quiet and soul-stirring, ghostly harmonies elevating raw, sad vocal lines that can pierce with a whisper. That’s normally the end of the story for indie folk artists, but instead Daniel Nunnelee often turns his choruses into catchy, pop numbers. Suddenly you’re in the middle of an instant sing-a-long, right before Nunnelee strips things back again to contemplative bedroom folk. Throughout these dynamics, Nunnelee plain sounds great, a big-voiced singer that feels right at home within these Americana anthems. (Kevin McStravick)
