Divorce - “Sex & The Millennium Bridge”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Wednesday, Ratboys, Spirit of the Beehive

Anthemic rock that avoids predictable hooks, Divorce’s music is grand and dense while still being wholly themselves. Ultimately grounded in Americana and alt-country tones, Divorce use those nostalgic elements and retrofit them to an electric, raw sound that marries melancholy and intensity in unexpected ways. Employing two vocalists and able to fit new moods track to track, Divorce’s music is constantly surprising while rarely relying on dissonance or exploration for exploration sake. Songs like “Scratch Your Metal” and “Sex & The Millennium Bridge” are miles away from the Americana bedrock guiding “Eat My Words”, but as a whole sound completely together on Divorce’s second EP Heady Metal. That balance of catchy familiarity and off-kilter indie rock is where Divorce really succeed and earn a spot next to buzzier artists experimenting in a similar rock/country space. (Kevin McStravick)
