Ferdinand the Bull - “4:30 AM”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…The Lumineers, Houndmouth, The Avett Brothers

Stomp-and-holler folk rock band Ferdinand the Bull captures a revivalist spirit on their 2018 sophomore record Painting Over Pictures, a set of acoustic rambles fitting nicely alongside their acoustic pop peers. Bluegrass, Americana, and country patterns find themselves in Ferdinand the Bull’s music, highlighting the Pittsburgh band’s tight, studied musicianship. Painting Over Pictures is hope over remorse, peppered with major pop hooks leading to natural sing-a-longs. Especially in pandemic times, this roots-laden rock is refreshing and nostalgic, so hopefully whatever is next for the peacefully catchy trio. (Kevin McStravick)
