flipturn - “Something You Needed”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…Hiss Golden Messenger, Field Report, Father John Misty

While flipturn live in an alt-country space on Something You Needed, the Florida rock band adds depth to their music both through alt-rock inflections and the melodic vocals of frontman Dillon Basse. A textured instrument, Basse’s voice takes jazz-influenced runs, playing with volume and inflection in a similar manner to Jeff Buckley’s expertise. Those melodies add a hint of soul swing to what would otherwise point to Americana roots, creating a sound borrowing from classic pop as much as back-porch picking. Harder rock and dream pop moments inform flipturn’s back catalogue as well and a sign to keep track of this unique band as they continue to evolve. (Kevin McStravick)
