Geese - “Disco"
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 5
Pairs Well With…Parquet Courts, Dirty Projectors, Black Country New Road
Jangly indie rock and wild post-punk melodies define Geese’s excellent debut record Projector, a unique and consistent sound bleeding creative energy. Complex guitar and bass lines dance around Geese’s psychedelic rock stew, teetering on the edge of chaos while locked onto multiple grooves per track. Influences range from 70s math rock, 00s NYC indie rock, and throwback soul - it’s so appealing how Geese pull off so much going on at once while not necessarily sounding busy and certainly not overwrought. Balancing tight sections and looser jams, Geese perform as much like a collection of jazz musicians than the grimy rock and roll that their music tends to represent. Frontman Cameron Winter delivers his vocals with a warbly, melancholy touch, a tone that cooly counters the complexity within their music, finding a sweet spot between yearning and care free. Geese are one of the most exciting bands on the SXSW roster this year because of the new space they are paving while learning from all that has come before, an appealing cacophony of sound that maintains a catchy quality track to track.
