Geskle - “New York”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Tame Impala, Ben Kweller, The DMA’s

A little indie rock, a little chillwave R&B, Geskle keeps a chilled, spaced out atmosphere on his debut EP Rose Colored Glasses and a trio of follow-up singles released since. The dreamy air that Geskle plays in allows his songs to move with freedom while still anchored by a tight soul or rock groove. While not quite lo-fi, Geskle is far from shiny pop, finding a comfortable landing to vibe. From there, the Massachusetts-based artist dips into psych-rock diversions on a whim, turning constantly instead of just relying on a relaxing demeanor. The two singles released last year, “Half of It” and “New York”, add some folk and alt-country influences amid tightening songwriting, the latter track being the most pop-oriented and accessible of their early career. It’s interesting to hear an artist growing so much single to single and spells well for whatever is next for this genre hopping artist. Plus, is there any other artist that has successfully used the word “Worcester” as a key lyric? You did it, Geskle. (Kevin McStravick)
