The Garrys - “Sintaluta”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 7

Pairs Well With…Best Coast, Alvvays, Tennis

The Garrys’ fourth record and their latest, 2021’s Get Thee to a Nunnery, is an album steeped in indie rock, surf pop, and canyon folk while still keeping a melancholy spirit throughout. What stands out on this record is how easy and comfortable The Garrys sound, melding subtly psychedelic riffs with airy pop vocals in seamless precision. 50s/60s rock is thrown back on Get Thee to a Nunnery, but The Garrys filter those influences into a core sound that is more distinct and personal than reverential and backward-looking. There’s a cinematic quality to The Garrys’ music as well, notes ringing reverb and patience that recall Western landscapes on aged 35mm film found deep within the genre’s archives.
