Katerine Duska - “Call Me Nyx”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 9

Pairs Well With…Florence & the Machine, The Weeknd, Halsey

Katerine Duska has since followed up breakout single “Better Love” with a trio of tracks since the start of the pandemic, all embracing big-pop intentions and are strong vehicles for the Greek artist’s textured vocal tone. “Sanctuary” starts cooled before building to a full-on R&B-dance track while “Athenian Skies” gives off anthemic notes over a disco-soul groove. The highlight of the three is “Call Me Nyx”, deep, creative, and adding in some hip hop rhythms in her vocals and music. By getting a little weirder and introverted, Duska’s music actually sounds bigger and more engaging, a trait that hopefully informs whatever is next for the appealing pop artist. (Kevin McStravick)

2020 Review: Katerine Duska’s 2019 single “Better Love” is a huge track, a life and love-affirming anthem of power and self-worth. It’s the kind of song that seeps into the greater culture and proves Duska as a fully formed pop artist ready for big international stages. The Greek artist paired “Same Love” with “ANEMOS”, a duet with Leon of Athens in her native language and shows a more understated sound though there is still some big, building pop in the song’s chorus. Her 2015 full-length Embodiment has hints of the grand sound that Duska is sharing now, but “Better Love” is a big leap forward and an exciting taste of what might come next from the strongly voiced performer.
