Classic pop, alt country, and twee reflections inform Katy J Pearson’s debut Return, bridging these genres together through personal, engaging songwriting. Strings and horns accompany Pearson’s otherwise alt/folk-rock instrumentation, adding cinematic moments without overpowering wire to wire. Subtle yet full, the British newcomer recalls classic pop/rock in the mode of Fleetwood Mac, but sands her sound down enough to feel comfortable today. While rarely going above a mid-tempo pace, Pearson also avoids going pure indie folk on any of the songs on Return, finding density and excitement like the hopeful melodies that end songs like “Take Back the Radio” and “Miracle".
