Formerly performing under the name Loamlands, Kym Register & Meltdown Rodeo are a bit of a mystery leading into SXSW 2023, but digging back into Loamlands’ 2016 record Sweet High Rise and follow-up Lez Dance set the foundation for a band able to bridge alt-country and bedroom-rock forms into something relaxing while still being memorable. Acoustic guitars and traditional country songwriting set the tone for Kym Register’s music, but it is delivered in a lonely, spacious environment that gives these songs a raw disposition. The result is sad, lonely, and ultimately beautiful, aided by a patient touch, fulfilling harmonies, and Kym Register’s quivering vocals that fit spot-on with the open-nature of the band’s music.
