La Doña - “Mi Nuevo Amor”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Lido Pimienta, Reyna Tropical, Girl Ultra

Since last checking in during 2020, La Doña released her first EP Algo Nuevo, a collection of the creative, Latin-pop force’s early singles fusing traditional Mexican tones with modern pop production. She continued releasing singles into last year, including a couple Mariachi collaborations with Los Texmaniacs and dream-pop/dance merger “Setas y Ceros”. Latest single “Mi Nuevo Amor” is a swinging, romantic track accented by hip-hop melodies and dancehall rhythms, another example of La Doña’s precise songcraft while fully embodying fusion pop. Creativity oozes from La Doña’s music and her explorative ways make every one of her singles worth a full listen to see how she winds her way from point A to point B. (Kevin McStravick)

2020 Review: A fusion artist striking her own lane and still sounding fun and authentic, San Francisco’s La Doña merges rich Mexican and Caribbean traditions with  creative, upbeat hip hop modes. Specifically, La Doña draws from sounds born from her hometown hyphy energy with psychedelic-tinged rap tones finding ways into her music, but at its heart, La Doña performs rumba and corridos reflections with deep, studied roots. Horns and strings are interspersed with deep bass beats, pretty, soaring, beautiful melodies turning into raw, cooled hip hop.
