Upbeat sing-a-longs highlight Larkins’ music, anthemic pop numbers that anchor their debut studio full-length JCOY. The UK band released their first tracks seven years ago and there’s growth in how big these songs sound, ballads and groovers alike. Rich alt-rock vocals ride above Larkins’ electronic and piano-pop instrumentation, sometimes autotuned and others in full, natural voice. A little smooth and a little emo, Larkins makes grand statements feel comfortable, always balancing soft melodic tones with driving rock rhythms. It’s a funky and fun sound even when emotionally yearning, a vibe that should translate to an affirming live set at SXSW this year. (Kevin McStravick)
