Lamont Landers - “Piece of Me”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Mayer Hawthorne, Michael Kiwanuka, Durand Jones & the Indications

Lamont Landers’ latest single “Piece of Me” sounds like a sweet slice of Seventies soul, a cinematic and smooth platform for the Alabamian artist’s rich vocal tone. Hearing this music coming out of a skinny white dude’s mouth is a head-turner, but his approach is reverential and it’s clear he’s spent much time studying the melodies of R&B past-masters. He’s had an interesting career path that includes a run on America’s Got Talent, evolving away from pure-pop, blues rock energy to more moving soul throwbacks. Given how much “Piece of Me” stands out against the rest of Lamont’s catalog, it’ll be interesting to see what’s next for an artist that may be finding his ideal lane right now. (Kevin McStravick)
