Laura-Mary Carter - “Blue’s Not My Colour”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Lana Del Rey, Angel Olsen, Weyes Blood

Part folk and part cinematic pop, Laura-Mary Carter’s debut EP Town Called Nothing first presents as a cooled, alt-country record. There’s something more robust there however, a little dreamy and a little psychedelic even as Carter confirms her roots throughout the record. Pretty and full, the classic-pop grabbings in “Blue’s Not My Colour” is a great example of how Carter is able to personalize throwback leanings. Imaginably there is a new music on the way and Carter is joining the SXSW roster alongside recent collaborator Holly Macve (a serene, spaced out cover of “Blue Moon”), but Town Called Nothing alone shows off an artist of quiet impact and creativity around a traditionally grounded genre.
