Mick Flannery - “Machine”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 7

Pairs Well With…Glen Hansard, Ray LaMontagne, Amos Lee

Mick Flannery falls square into the notion of Irish troubadour, highly emotive acoustic performances highlighting his extensive catalog since 2008 debut White Lies. Heaps of soul, classic rock, and blues inform Flannery’s latest record, 2023’s Goodtime Charlie. More full-band than spare singer-songwriter material, there are moments on Goodtime Charlie that rock hard with swampy energy. Other times pull in classic pop modes - the adaptability in Flannery’s sound stands out and is the sign of an experienced artist mastering his craft. Pairing that energy with raw, personal performances when things do pare back again yields a well-rounded record from a reliable, comfortable artist. (Kevin McStravick)
