Paul Jacobs - “Christopher Robbins”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Mac DeMarco, Woods, Pottery

A prolific songwriter and lo fi technician, Paul Jacobs sounds controlled even within the inherent looseness of his music. The Canadian artist’s latest is 2021’s Pink Dogs on the Green Grass, a psychedelic pop record influenced by classic songwriting, but performed from a bedroom/garage pop angle. Most of the songs are breezy and distant on Pink Dogs, loose and tripped out numbers focused around mid-tempo rock, but with a post-punk mindset. Jacobs has had a busy decade also as the drummer for Pottery, but it seems like he needs different outlets as a vehicle for his song-crafting energy and reverence to past punk and rock artists that influence Jacobs’ unique play into psych pop/rock deviations on Pink Dogs.
