Red Rum Club - “The River”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…Sam Fender, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Of Monsters & Men

Red Rum Club aren’t steering away from the sunny rock/pop that has defined their catalog judging from the uber-catchy 2022 singles “Vanilla” and “The River”. The former is a funky, beach pop track, finger snaps and Red Rum Club’s horn section included, while “The River” takes a folk-rock template to attach their sing-a-long melodies. It’s a joy hearing the English band continue to lean into fun grooves and vibrant indie rock, smartly keeping things tight and taking advantage of their excelled musicianship instead of stretching into murkier territory. 2022 Review: The sounds of summer beam off of Red Rum Club’s third full-length How To Steal The World, bright melodies and hooks leading the heartwarming indie-rock record. The Liverpool six-piece are unafraid of joy, combining life-affirming lyrics with upbeat grooves to produce memorable, tightly crafted soul rock tracks. Classic R&B influences play a key role in Red Rum Club’s sound as well, both in the chilled-funk grooves of a track like “Vibrate” and the horn section that consistently accompanies the band’s choruses and jams.
