SANITY - “Late Night”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Little Simz, Sampa the Great, Loyle Carner

SANITY is a British rapper taking a jazzy, cooled approach to Grime rap, intense bars that stand out against the spacey backbeats that underpin her debut record Bruises To Blossoms. There’s something nicely off kilter about the juxtaposition of SANITY’s rhymes and her music, shaking expectation while showing off the Birmingham-based artist’s rap abilities in energy-inducing ways. SANITY is influenced in old-school hip hop, playful around the beat with grit and personality. She takes that and add a futurist lens, knowing the rules in order to break them. While there are understated elements at play on Bruises To Blossoms, SANITY is in no way holding back. These songs are confidently performed, exploring while never getting too weird that she loses the core threads of her music. Catch SANITY at the British Music Embassy for hip hop night on Friday evening. (Kevin McStravick)
