School of X - “New Friend”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Beck, Tame Impala, MGMT

School of X continued expanding his chillwave catalog in 2021 with Dancing Through The Void, the Danish artist’s second full-length since 2019 debut EP Destiny, collected tracks of low-key grooves and subtle, sunny melodies. There’s a personable, bedroom rock spirit on Dancing Through The Void, a record that adds hazy layers to shift pop tracks by eclectically twisting melodic expectations. School of X’s music is ultimately soulful in its own way, adding close, personal songwriting to the woozy sway of his ultra-comfortable music. (Kevin McStravick)

2020 Review: A balance of indie folk and chillwave pop embody Destiny, the sophomore release from Dutch artist School of X, dreamily produced with minimalist hands and hazy distance. School of X’s sound is cool and comfortable, going between synth soundwaves, acoustic strumming, and some jazzy interventions across the subtly soulful EP. Opener “I’ll Never Be Ready to Die” is a sad lullaby of almost New Orleans style jazz informing the echoed melody, and is bookended by highlight “Write My Name”, one of the fuller songs in his catalog adding some nice mid-tempo swing.
