Searows - “End of the World”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 9

Pairs Well With…Mehro, Phoebe Bridgers, Arlo Parks

Searows’ patient, echoing brand of indie folk sounds somewhat outer worldly, melodies floating gracefully instead of falling into any pop/rock formulas. Lush soundwaves ebb and flow, orchestral and synth swells that overtake the gentle fingerpicking and vocals at the core of Searows’ songs. Take that away and these are still pretty ballads that could hold their own, but the atmosphere on his debut record Guard Dog and recent follow-up EP End of the World ends up being the strongest musical takeaway. The Portland-based singer-songwriter has a naturally emotive tone as well, impactful with a whisper and subtly textured both naturally and through the production on his songs. It’s a beautiful listen and should make for a moving SXSW showcase at a perfect venue for him, St David’s Historic Sanctuary on Thursday night. (Kevin McStravick)
