S.G. Goodman - “Space And Time”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Jade Bird, Brandi Carlile, Erin Rae

S.G. Goodman was one of many unexpected highlights of Newport Folk last year, performing a charming Americana set that was rooted, personal, and shared with sweet soul. The Kentucky singer-songwriter released her debut record Old Time Feeling in 2020, a collection cooly produced by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. It’s a spacious, heart-worn album comprised of timeless alt country ballads and smoky, barroom rambles, a beautiful record from an artist able to draw tears and smiles in her connecting live sets. 2020 Review: Kentucky-based singer-songwriter S.G. Goodman recently shed her previous moniker The Savage Radley, expectedly in preparation to follow up 2017’s wide-ranging Americana debut Kudzu. Goodman often takes a patient and pretty approach to the genre led by ballads “Werewolf” and “Milk and Honey”, but tracks like the burning, garage rock infused “Gone” show an artist loaded with grit to match her roots-embodied vocal. Foot-stomping ramblers like “Hammers” and “Worm (On Hot Pavement)” add swampy reverb to Goodman’s sound, a trend that emboldens her music well beyond her seemingly natural roots.
