Sir Woman - “Party City”
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 4
Pairs Well With…India Arie, HAIM, Chromeo
Sir Woman has evolved from her folk-rock past with Wild Child and has gone all-in on soulful funk with 2020 debut EP Bitch and follow-up tracks “Party City” and “Blame It On the Water”. The Austin-based artist employs a rich, low vocal that fuses her jazz-infused melodies with a modern and cleanly produced sound. She’s a natural, soulful vocalist studied in 60s pop, but performed with modern charm, able to entice in moments both load and quiet. While Sir Woman is sharing personal songwriting in her growing catalog, she’s also sure to add some fun too in both her lyricism and groovy piano pop performed with feet-shuffling instincts. 2020 Review: “Highroad” is the first single from Wild Child’s Kelsey Wilson as Sir Woman, moving away from the effervescent folk rock sound of her main unit to sweet, soul-pop sound built on classic grooves and melodies. A warm track also infused with indie pop bounce, “Highroad” is as infectious as it is comforting, rounded out with jazz and funk dynamics that steer the track into cinematic territory as the song subtly evolves over four minutes. Sir Woman has followed up “Highroad” with two songs that follow similar indie-soul threads, but latest single “Speak” is a more spacious, internal song that gives Sir Woman a softly psychedelic, ambient R&B angle to add to her otherwise past-connects-present approach.
