Snotty Nose Rez Kids - “Sink or Swim” (w/ Just John)
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 9
Pairs Well With…Earthgang, Kota the Friend, Injury Reserve
Snotty Nose Rez Kids shared their fourth record last year and Life After is a strong continuation of the duo’s pop-oriented, psych-rap hip hop. It’s their most rap-filled record, bringing lyricism forward and showing off the band’s precise, quick vocal skills. Classic NYC rap, trap, and Southern hip hop influences can found in SNRK’s sound - Life After is a record that has a global view in the way it incorporates all these forms and applies them to their distinct, Indigenous lens. It’s an excitable, club-leaning album that should yield an affirming set at SXSW 2022 closing Lucille for Range Magazine Thursday night, a perfect slot following other exciting hip hop acts Just John, Cartel Madras, and Haviah Mighty. 2020 Review: Self described as Indigenous Trap, Snotty Nose Rez Kids (SNRK) bring their unique perspective from the Haisla reservation in Kimimat, British Columbia to Austin this year to promote Trapline, the duo’s third full-length. SNRK spit a mix of fun and serious rhymes, steeped in both classic and modern flows and nicely unique in tone and timbre. Having two rappers alongside a mix of collaborators gives Trapline a pass-the-mic vibe - often they’ll reference other songs in tracks like mini-shout outs to their contemporary influences. Both Young D and Young Trybez move from chilled to quick-spitted raps in their energetic flows, sharp and clearly studied.
