SUSTO - “Get Down”
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 6
Pairs Well With…Dawes, Deer Tick, Blitzen Trapper
SUSTO’s most recent record Time in the Sun add much-needed vibrancy to the band’s power-pop and Southern rock songwriting, moving beyond alt-country into catchy, indie rock territory. There’s still Western vibes on Time in the Sun, but SUSTO’s reach could bring mainstream ears for the combination of accessible and interesting themes that define Time in the Sun. That said, this is a band ready to explore at a moment’s notice, so look for these songs to stretch even more come SXSW 2022. (Kevin McStravick)
2015 Review: There’s no need to reinvent the rules when it comes to Americana rock music, so SUSTO’s wheelhouse approach on their 2014 debut goes down ever so easy. Their songs all fall in a mid-tempo, mid-ramble range, simply accompanied to highlight the band’s classic songwriting. Everything is just subdued enough, steering heartily away from pop country to share something much more natural. Slide guitar and clever, little percussion patterns are just enough to round out SUSTO’s comfortable grounding. It’s simple, analysis aside - these are just really good songs. SUSTO is already prepping a follow-up and it’s fine for them to stay right in their lane and just grow from there.
