BIRTHH - “Yello / Concrete”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 6
Pairs Well With…The xx, Tennis, Phoebe Bridgers
BIRTHH finally has a follow-up ready from her minimal electronic pop debut Born in the Woods and the Italian artist has embraced more of an indie folk direction judging from the trio of singles from WHOA, due this March. While bare acoustic moments highlight “Supermarket” and the wrenching “Parakeet”, there are dynamic production elements that twist something lonely into moments more mysterious and inventive. “Yello / Concrete” is the exception from the rule, a cool trip hop number that highlights BIRTHH’s R&B grooviness within a spacious plane. It’ll be exciting to hear the rest of WHOA since all three tracks sound fresh and burst with subtle creativity, as well as check a set out at SXSW to hear one of the first runs of these new songs live. 2019 Review: BIRTHH has been playing new tunes live, so 2019’s SXSW showcase will hopefully be in support of a new record following her riveting, spacious 2016 debut Born in the Woods. Interplaying musical minimalism and vocal drama, BIRTHH’s music is full of passion and personality, finding invention in beats and melodies.
2017 Review: Electronic and guitar/bass sounds find common ground in BIRTHH’s debut record Born in the Woods, a slow boiling album that exhumes with echoed subtly. Contemplative and passionate, Alice Bisi commands between whispers and targeted moments of pop explosions. Their common formula with The xx, smooth guitar lines, inventive production and similar vocals, are comparisons worth drawing since the results are well crafted and convincing.
