Gripping tentpoles between jazz and experimental electronic music, Emma-Jean Thackray is stretching instrumental boundaries on her debut EP Ley Lines and follow-up singles “Won’t Get Better” and “Too Shy”. Thackray’s analog sound ranges from spaced ambience (“Make Do”, “Red Bush”), free jazz cacophony (“Howley”) and full-band trip hop on most recent track “Too Shy”. The latter has some helpings of Afro-pop and jungle rhythms too, a cool space for Thackray to experiment amid musical intensity instead of starting in empty air. (Kevin McStravick)
