Feralcat - “Jaguar”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 2
Pairs Well With…The Comet Is Coming, Melt Yourself Down, Sons of Kemet
Feralcat is one cool cat. Think John Coltrane hooked up with a garage rock band. Feralcat is Roger Rafael Romero who says he’s been trying to subvert conventional expectations about saxophone music, describing his project as progressive and art rock. Whatever you want to call it, it’s good and it’s original. Feralcat moves seamlessly within songs from driving blues and garage guitars to interludes of pure jazz saxophone and then back again. “Jaguar” is the standout track but listen to “Squirtle” too. It’s high energy in your face music yet smooth at the same time. Oh, and it’s completely instrumental. But don’t fear being bored, Feralcat will have you purring along, like well, a hepcat, during his set. (David Zlotnick)
