Johnny Lloyd - “Next Episode Starts in 15 Seconds”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 9
Pairs Well With…Frank Turner, LA Salami, Tribes
Johnny Lloyd’s indie rock band Tribes disbanded in 2013. In 2017, he released a pop-oriented EP. Then he moved lived Stateside and had a baby. Last year, he released an acoustic alt-folk record, “Next Episode Starts in 15 Seconds,” of stripped back and unpretentious songs. Fatherhood apparently has a way of simplifying a man. But although simple and quiet, the record is compelling due to the strength of the song writing, varied vocal styles, limited but effective arrangements, and most importantly, his heartfelt, sometimes funny insights into life’s journey and the world’s problems. Start with the title track which begins with stream of consciousness spoken lyrics and then slows down for the emotionally resonant chorus. It doesn’t hurt that his friend, Frank Turner, sings the backing vocals. “Fix” channels Dylan with some cool harmonica playing. “Mass Shooting” takes on gun violence in America with satire and an organ interlude at the end. Expect a crowd but you’ll likely hear a pin drop as Lloyd’s fans will want to soak up every word. Just don’t come expecting to see Frank Turner with him – he’s touring across the pond – I checked.
