Hamzaa presents throwback vibes in her music, a new-soul artist that’s more smooth than experimental on her two 2019 EPs Phases and First Signs of Me. While often performing in a cool, jazzy pocket, Hamzaa has some big moments in her early catalog like the arena grandeur of recent highlight “Write It Down”. Her voice is nicely put forward, a confident instrument that can be subtle or powerful dependent on what her songs demand. There are interesting Afropop inflections that creep into Hamzaa’s melodies as well, applying extra texture without taking away from her pop-R&B songwriting. (Kevin McStravick)
