Huck - “Primetime”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5
Pairs Well With…Twin Shadow, Cuco, Moses Sumney
Huck followed up his 2018 debut full-length with a string of singles last year continuing his unique discovery of chillwave R&B with an ambitious, detailed hand. “Autumn in NY” melds prog, jazz, and bedroom pop forms into a psychedelic pop jam, surprisingly avoiding sounding busy given how complex a ride Huck takes the track in just under three minutes. “Primetime” is a sexier trip, washed out synths playing over a smooth-funk bassline and strangely hypnotic air. Huck’s music is lounge-ready but deep and unexpected - it’ll be interesting the hear what he has musically cooked up for 2020. (Kevin McStravick)
2019 Review: Electronic R&B artist Huck adds playful elements to a genre normally relegated to sultry and dream soundscapes, loosely projected across his washed out and cool self-titled debut. Bedroom soul with a wink, Huck creates in lo fi personality and subtle ambition, music that’s a tentpole between accessible and weird. One common thread weaved through Huck is born of classic jazz chords and melodies, creating complexity over music that ultimately maintains a carefree spirit.
