Ings - “Dog Physics"

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Bjork, Feist, Hoop

After six years with other bands and two EPS, Ings (Inge Chiles) released her debut record last year, titled Lullaby Rock. The hushed but confident singing, lush orchestral strings, fingerpicking, harmonies, and experimentation reflect an experienced artist getting her chance to have her say. The lyrics focus on healing and growth with many songs beginning with a repeated phrase or affirmation from her life or references to classic books.  But her orchestration and experimentation that makes some of her work even more interesting.  My favorite is “Dog Physics” which begins with classic folk guitar picking and her soft soothing voice.  A minute later, she introduces a darker slide guitar riff.  But the real treat is three minutes in when the song gets crashed by twenty seconds of a sonic explosion that conveys a sense of previously repressed emotions.   It’s as surprising as it is effective.  My only caveat is that I hope she is able to  recreate this sound live. Ings sitting on a stool alone with an acoustic guitar would still be worth hearing, but I’m hoping she brings her range and complexity to a live set in Austin.  If you want a second song, listen to gentle and poppier “If Not You.” (David Zlotnick)
