Jehnny Beth - “Flower”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…The xx, Sleigh Bells, Savages

Savages’ Jehnny Beth has shared two singles from her debut full-length To Live Is to Live and it’s gearing up to be an adventurous, darkly tinted pop record filled with slices of experimental rhythms and melodies. Starting with post-punk rager “I’m the Man”, Beth introduces her solo material as tensely spastic and adds strong, industrial measures before diverting into a distant piano ballad towards the song’s coda. “Flower” falls more into trip-hop/dream-pop territory, incorporating space and a haunting quality to both her theatrical vocal movements and synth-wave soundscapes. Jehnny Beth is excitedly taking her solo sound to realms unexplored by Savages and is arguably creating some of the most interesting music of her career. (Kevin McStravick)
