SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 9

Pairs Well With…Madlib, DJ Premier, The Alchemist

Master beatmaker/producer Statik Selektah has been on a prolific run since the top of 2019, releasing ten (!) records since including collaborations and solo efforts, even getting in on the post-pandemic game last month with 1982: The Quarantine. A collaboration with rapper Termanology, their third full-length together, Statik Selektah’s beats give off a classic, indie rap vibe, infused with jazz melodies and organic backbeats aided by tasteful scratches and head-nodding grooves. Themes of both tense claustrophobia and hope for the times after highlight both the lyrics and musical mood on 1982: The Quarantine, an impressive work given the under-a-week turnaround for the pair, as well a dozen other features including Kota the Friend, Marlon Craft, and Allan Kingdom, just a taste of what Statik Selektah has been tightly pulling off the last couple of years. 2017 Review: Hip hop producer Statik Selektah is tough to describe since he’s able to morph into all sorts of rap sub-genres, but ‘consistent’ is an easy tag to put on the quality of all songs that the Brooklyn-based artist. Soul samples, scratch rhythms, throwback and futurist - there’s examples of all these forms on STATIK KXNG, Statik’s 2016 record with KXNG Crooked, an album where both artists add up greater as the sum of their parts.

2012 Review: Statik Selektah is one of the most in demand producers in hip hop, rappers don’t just want one Statik track they want to do whole albums with him. Recently he’s paired with established and emerging rappers Freeway, Freddie Gibbs, Bumpy Knuckles, and Action Bronson among others. His songs are marked by soulful samples and skillful scratches. Statik is taking part in a couple solid showcases giving fans multiple opportunities to see him perform with a long list of well known rappers.
