SwinGrowers – “Midnight”

SXSW 2020 – OEB Score 8; Popularity Index 9

Pairs well with…Moonlight Breakfast, Big Bad Voodoo Party, Caravan Palace

Yes, Electro Swing is a thing – who knew?  The Sicilian SwinGrowers are talented four-piece band that mixes gypsy swing, contemporary jazz and pop with electronica.  It’s dynamic and danceable.  The female vocalist, Loredana Grimaudo, does an effective job channeling Ella Fitzgerald meets Amy Winehouse but it’s the EDM tracking that brings a modern edge and some serious jam to their live music.  SwinGrowers started off, as many electro swing bands do, with covers and sampling.  The band’s latest album is mostly original composition.  That being said, they also do some fun covers, including “Pump Up the Jam” and “Sandman.” Occasionally, they feature a hip hop vocalist, adding yet another twist such as on “Healing Dance” with Davide Shorty.  For a taste of their original songs in addition to “Midnight,” listen to “Butterfly” and No Strings Attached.”  Come to their set ready to move and remember to pack a tux or flapper dress and a glow stick headband.  (David Zlotnick)
