The Accidentals - “Marrow”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 6
Pairs Well With…Wild Child, Houndmouth, Lake Street Dive
Heading into their eighth year as a trio, The Accidentals immediately stand out for their tightness. Based around folk-rock forms, the Michigan-based outfit extend from gentle acoustic numbers like recent single “Marrow” to building set-closers comprised of harmonies and chamber pop instrumentation. The band twisted expectations with a live album in 2019 encompassing new tracks in lieu of singalong favorites, a smart production choice as these songs pop as much as anything in the band’s back catalog. SXSW 2016 Review: A folk trio with rock-pop leanings, The Accidentals are a pleasant listen bolstered by vocal harmonies and nice, laid back songwriting. While there’s a bit of exploration track to track (the jazzy “Tragic Mishaps”, calypso tune “Bittersweet”), 2013 record is more consistent than not.
