The Haden Triplets - “Every Time I Try”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 6
Pairs Well With…Joseph, The Carter Family, The Secret Sisters
The Haden Triplets’ sophomore record The Family Songbook is a roots record in the truest sense of the word, with the sisters resurfacing songs written by their grandfather Carl E. Haden and performing them with Americana instrumentation and their signature three-way harmonies. The songs of The Family Songbook are wide and natural, storytelling ballads written with a sense of sweet soul. Honestly, The Haden Triplets could be singing the phone book and those harmonies would still well up the eyes, but The Family Songbook is a perfect fit for their timeless sound. (Kevin McStravick)
2014 Review: It’s doubtful there will be a review of The Haden Triplets that isn’t praising the rich harmonies that dominate their throwback country sound, so no need for me to be the first. It is pretty remarkable on record and surely this is going to kill live. ‘Throwback’ here is for real – traditional interpretations and covers of old country-pop tunes mark The Haden Triplets’ debut LP. Even though their eyes are pointed to the past, that doesn’t take away from how strong they sound on their debut, elegantly produced by family friend Ry Cooder.
