The Lazy Eyes - “Cheesy Love Song”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 3
Pairs Well With…Tame Impala, The Lemon Twigs, ELO
The Lazy Eyes clearly spent their high school years pouring through 70s psychedelic rock records to develop such a strong, throwback-space vibe on their debut single “Cheesy Love Song”. An adventurous and moving track that dips into piano balladry, soaring guitar solos, Beach Boys harmonies, and symphonic pop over the course of five-plus minutes, “Cheesy Love Song” is noticeably tight for such a dreamy atmosphere. By building and shifting minute by minute, The Lazy Eyes nail their compositionally graceful sound, tripping out while keeping a simple classic pop/rock core in their songwriting. While this could easily turn into an epic burst, The Lazy Eyes smartly maintain warmth and cooled spirit through all of “Cheesy Love Song”. The emerging Australian quartet should have some sort of release in 2020, but SXSW will provide an early opportunity to see what this exciting, young band has beyond this impressive entry.
