The Tiarras - “La Negra Tomasa”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Luna Luna, Chicano Batman, Lido Pimienta

We just have one single since picking up on The Tiarras for SXSW 2023, a continuation of the band’s mix of traditional Mexican folk and threads of psych-rock melodies and drive. It’s a mix that is both fun and serious, danceable and reverential. The Tiarra’s don’t lose the base of their traditional foundation ever though when adding these rock and pop elements, rather it’s used to broaden their sound. There is no need to go off the beaten path when those traditions are so moving on their own, but it’s enticing to see a band take that sound to a new and different level. (Kevin McStravick)

2023 Review: Part Mexican folk and part breezy psych pop, Austin’s The Tiarras (fka The Tiarra Girls) meld these influences into sweet grooves while experimenting both in synth-pop and garage-rock zones. Singing mostly in English, The Tiarras bridge the lightness of Latin pop and crunch of indie rock naturally, mixing sun and darker clouds without ever sounding out of place. Note the hints of reggaeton that inform songs like “Let Love Free” and most recent single “Cumbia en el Cielo”. a unique space for their melancholy rock setting, one that connects past and present with an easy touch.
